Some of the neighborhoods in Oakland  reach from the "flatlands" neighborhoods which include the historically working-class areas of West Oakland, North Oakland, Fruitvale, and East Oakland up into the foothill districts (Grand Lake, Lakeshore-Trestle Glen, the Glenview, Lincoln Heights, the Laurel, Redwood Heights, Dimond,  Maxwell Park, Eastmont, and Millsmont), and into the high hills communities (North Hills, Hiller Highlands, Upper Rockridge, Montclair, Ridgemont, Grass Valley, Sequoyah Hills.) Several flatland neighborhoods are considered trendy and are gentrifying rapidly (Rockridge, Temescal, Piedmont Ave., Adams Point, Lake Merritt.) Downtown neighborhoods include the Loft District, the Waterfront, Old Oakland, Chinatown, and Uptown. The character of these neighborhoods continues to change as waves of immigrants from within the US and other countries relocate here for a more liberal lifestyle and the changing economy lures more technically skilled workers.

In the Fruitvale Area of Oakland the  "transit village" is being developed around the Fruitvale BART station.   This include new housing, offices and senior and child care centers.

Oakland Airport which has plans to add additional terminals, gates, and an expanded garage to double the amount of parking. New stores and hotels have been added and are flourishing.

Sequoyah Hills located above 580 between Keller and Golf Links with the top at Skyline Blvd.  The HOA has a web site

Crocker Highlands features including quaint tree-lined streets, a wide diversity of architecture designed homes from the 20s, 30s and 40s, and easy access to freeways and BART. Convenient location within minutes to shopping,

Oakland's Rockridge, located on border of Oakland and Berkeley, offers an  upscale, yuppie feel with old world European charm with its boutiques, markets and gourmet restaurants with easy access to the BART station.

Jack London Square  offers an array of shops, restaurants around the water front. Lake Merrit adds even more to Oakland's downtown with picnic sites, Children's Fairyland Park, boating,  jogging trails and the evening it is lit up all the way around the lake.  More history information about Lake Merrit
Sheffield Villageis in Oakland, but is in San Leandro School District. Sheffield Village is located in just above I-580 between the Estudillo and 106th exit.  Built in 1939 the original tract of home have a historical designation and a Home Owners Association that maintains many community features as well as property values.  Photos of typical homes of Sheffield Village are at the Bottem of the page.

The city of Oakland is the largest city in Alameda county, boasting over 400,000 residents. With three sports teams (Raiders, Athletics, & Warriors), an ice skating rink, marinas, and five dozen parks, Oakland is the center for recreation. It is also home to Jack London Square which has many restaurants and shops and inexpensive housing.
